FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I purchase a domain name and hosting?
Before I start on your project, you will need to purchase a domain name and website hosting.
Domain name. If you don’t already have a domain name, I use Google Domains to register all of my domains. For many TLDs (.com, .net, etc.), the registration fee includes privacy, which means that if someone searches for the owner of your domain name, they will not have access to your name, address and phone number.
Regardless of where you register your domain, I will need access to the account so I can update the nameservers when your site is ready. (Nameservers “connect” your domain name to your web site host, so when visitors type in your domain name, they can see your site.)
Hosting. I build websites using WordPress, a free content management system. There are many hosting companies, but I use hosts capable of serving WordPress sites with ease. I like siteground.com a lot and for a one-page site, their StartUp plan is perfect.
How long does it take to build my site?
Generally, sites take three or more weeks to build. Please keep in mind that your site may take longer, dependent on my current schedule and how quickly you provide the items (content, graphics, logo, etc.) I need to complete the site.
Who writes all the content and provides the photos?
Content. You’ll provide all content for the site, including services you offer, about information, contact information, pricing, etc. and I will upload it to your site.
Images. If you have high quality images to use on the site, great! I will make arrangements to get those images from you.
If not, I will use free stock images found at sites like pixabay.com and unsplash.com. You can also purchase high quality images from a stock photo site like depositphotos.com for your site if you prefer unique imagery.
How do you build my site?
Along with WordPress, I’ll use a theme to design your site called Divi. I provide the initial Divi license so it’s included in the original cost of your site.
I’ll also install free plugins like Yoast (for SEO), Smush (for image optimization) and WP Super Cache (for faster load times) to your site.
I’ll draft a suggested layout online with colors and fonts to share with you early in the process so you can provide feedback.
Will you let me know how the site is progressing?
When we first start working together, we will communicate frequently to gather all the information I need to build your site.
I will share progress on your site periodically throughout the process and I welcome feedback and questions.
How much is this all going to cost me?
My fee to design your site starts at $599. Domain names cost approximately $12 for the first year and hosting costs about $100 for the first year ($300 after the first year).
I provide a premium theme called Divi at no additional cost to you. However, in order to keep the theme updated and working properly for years to come, I do suggest opting in to my affordable Website Care plan or purchasing a Divi license of your own.
What's a Website Care plan?
Sites do require care after a site is completed.
WordPress, themes (like Divi) and plugins, for example, are periodically updated and in order for your site to run at its best, need to be upgraded to the most current version. You can choose to do these things yourself or you can subscribe to my monthly Website Care plan where I handle these tasks for you.
Your Website Care plan costs $25 every month and includes:
- the ongoing cost of the Divi premium theme license (value: $89/year)
- WordPress updates
- Theme updates, including Divi
- Plugin updates for website security and functionality
- Replace outdated plugins as needed
- 30 minutes content update ($37.50 value)
